And when I walk around that store, I see 100s of people living life on their terms, buying food for people they love or work with or share homes with. It's a slice of life in South Austin and a snapshot of everyone who claims a piece of it. How is that a broken dream?
First off, because racism/classism/ableism. Secondly, because racism/classism/albeism. The store is vibrant, the shoppers are kind, and the employees are warm and welcoming. My dreams of becoming a parent who could shop and cook for her young kids came true in that store.
Reading responses to the H-E-B news yesterday, which range from "this is amazing" to "WTF." Also, a lot of references to the "HEB of Broken Dreams" or the "Ghetto HEB," both of which are terms I resolutely reject.
I am getting ready to talk about this HEB/Twin Oaks news on austin360radio.com.
